PTE Listening Format: Score And Exercises Explained

PTE listening is the last part of the PTE Exam and contains 8 types of exercises. It will take you between 45 to 57 minutes to complete. This part of the test will assess your PTE listening and writing skills. At the exam, you will have to answer to 15-20 questions for the listening module.

I will briefly go over the eight tasks of the PTE listening section to give you an introduction and the essential things to take into consideration when you practice or pass the PTE listening section. Here is the list of exercises ordered, as it will appear in the exam listening format.

  • Summarize Spoken Text
  • Multiple-choice, Multiple Answers
  • Fill in the Blanks
  • Highlight Correct Summary
  • Multiple-choice, Single Answer
  • Select Missing Word
  • Highlight Incorrect Words
  • Write from Dictation

The 8 PTE listening Exercises

1) Summarize Spoken Text

This first task will judge your PTE listening and writing abilities.

  • You'll listen to a recording of 60 to 90 seconds.
  • Use the Erasable Noteboard Booklet to take short notes.
  • You have 10 minutes to write a summary.
  • Write a minimum of 50 words but no more than 70 words.
  • You'll find 1 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 10 minutes on each of them.
  • This task is very important and quite difficult. Make sure you practice many of them during your PTE listening preparation.

Scoring for PTE Summarize Spoken Text

You will be scored a maximum of:

  • 2 points for content,

  • 2 points for form,

  • 2 points for grammar,

  • 2 points for vocabulary

  • 2 points for spelling,

  • 5 points for pronunciation.


2) Multiple-choice, Multiple Answers

This second task will judge your listening ability.

  • You have 7 seconds to read the question and various answers.
  • Listen to a recording of 40 to 90 seconds.
  • Choose the most suitable answers (many).
  • You will score 1 for each correct answer, -1 for each incorrect answer. You cannot get less than 0.
  • You'll find 2 to 3 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 2 minutes on each of them.
  • This task is of medium difficulty but doesn't have a significant impact on your exam score.

3) Fill in the Blanks

This third task will judge your PTE listening and writing abilities.

  • A recording between 30 to 60 seconds will play.
  • As you listen, type each word in the blank spaces.
  • You receive 1 point for each correct word which is spelled correctly.
  • Do not leave any spaces blank. No negative marking.
  • You'll find 2 to 3 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 2 minutes on each of them.
  • This task is of medium difficulty and is quite important.

4) Highlight Correct Summary

This fourth task will judge your PTE listening and reading abilities.

  • You have 10 seconds to read the question and various answers.
  • Listen to a recording of 30 to 90 seconds.
  • Choose only 1 option.
  • The score is either 1 or 0.
  • You'll find 2 to 3 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 1 minute on each of them.
  • This task is not difficult and doesn't have a significant impact on your exam score.

5) Multiple-choice, Single Answer

The fifth task will judge your listening ability.

  • Before starting, read the question and various answers.
  • Listen to a recording of 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Choose the most suitables answer (one only).
  • The score is either 1 or 0.
  • You'll find 2 to 3 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 2 minutes on each of them.
  • This task is easy and therefore, does not have high importance.

6) Select Missing Word

The sixth task will judge your listening ability.

  • Listen to a recording of 20 to 70 seconds.
  • You need to predict the last word or words.
  • The score is either 1 or 0.
  • You'll find 2 to 3 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 1 minute on each of them.
  • This task is easy and therefore, does not have high importance.

7) Highlight Incorrect Words

The seventh task will judge your PTE listening and reading abilities.

  • You have 10 seconds to skim the text quickly.
  • Listen to a recording of 15-50 seconds.
  • Select the words that are incorrect and do not match the recording.
  • You will score 1 for each correct answer, -1 for each incorrect answer. You cannot get less than 0.
  • You'll find 2 to 3 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 1 minute on each of them.
  • This task is of average difficulty and is important for your score. Make sure to do well.

8) Write from Dictation

The last task will judge your PTE listening and writing abilities.

  • Listen to a recording of 3-5 seconds.
  • Once it starts, listen and type the sentence in the response box.
  • You can receive 1 point for each correct word you write.
  • Make sure to write the words in the right order.
  • You'll find 3 to 4 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 1 minute on each of them.
  • This task is of average difficulty but is extremely important.
